People more concerned about violence in cities than Capitol riot: Poll

.

A poll shows that a majority of U.S. voters are more concerned about the violence that took place in cities over the summer than the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.

The most recent Harvard-Harris poll found that 55% of registered voters see violence in cities as more concerning, while 45% said the Capitol riot was more concerning. The poll also found that 71% of voters view antifa as a domestic terrorist group, with 29% of respondents disagreeing with that characterization. Meanwhile, 66% of respondents said they view the Proud Boys as a domestic terrorist group, while 34% said they do not view the group that way.

The poll comes as the Capitol riot continues to dominate much of the national discourse, with Democratic lawmakers carrying out hearings about the incident while Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has called for a 9/11 style commission report.

But voters view the violence that has plagued many of the major cities in the U.S. since the death of George Floyd as a more concerning issue, despite Democrats and major media outlets often casting these riots in a more positive light.

Voters also believe that the Capitol riots are being used by lawmakers in an attempt to suppress legitimate political movements, with 64% of respondents agreeing with that sentiment and 36% disagreeing.

Other issues covered by the poll were the popularity of President Biden’s early onslaught of executive orders. Biden’s most popular executive order was the mask mandate on federal property and airports, with 78% of voters viewing the policy favorably and 22% unfavorably. The president’s moratorium on evictions was also popular, with 73% viewing the order favorably and 27% unfavorably.

Biden’s least popular executive order was his move to let biological boys play girls sports, with 45% of voters viewing the policy favorably and 55% unfavorably. The executive order reducing deportations for illegal immigrants who have committed crimes was also unpopular, with 45% of voters saying they viewed the policy favorably and 55% unfavorably.

On border security, a large majority (67%) believe that people who cross the border illegally should be returned to Mexico, while 33% say those immigrants should be released in the U.S. and given a court date. When it comes to the border wall, 73% of voters say that holes in the wall should be patched up, while 27% say those holes should be left open. A majority of voters (79%) say the hundreds of miles of border wall that has already been constructed should be left up, while only 21% believe the wall should be dismantled.
