Hochul to direct $35M of state money to abortion providers in New York

New York will allocate $35 million to abortion providers in the state as the fate of Roe v. Wade is called into question.

The bulk of the sum, or roughly $25 million of the “unprecedented funding,” will be given to New York abortion providers from the state’s Department of Health, with an additional $10 million going to security grants for the providers. The donation will “hopefully set an example” for other states to “welcome with open arms” women who need abortions, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced on Tuesday.

“As the first female governor of the state of New York, this is a fight I am willing to take on, so let’s roll up our sleeves and let people know where our values are,” Hochul said. “We’re not backing down, and we’ll not stand idly by when rights of women across the entire nation are destroyed.”

Hochul was “horrified” by the Supreme Court opinion, leaked on May 2, that indicated the Supreme Court was slated to overturn Roe v. Wade and encouraged women to come to her state to receive abortions, saying, “New York will always be a place where abortion rights are protected and where abortion is safe and accessible.”

Other New York officials are taking steps to ensure widespread access to abortion in the wake of the leaked Supreme Court ruling. On Monday, New York Attorney General Letitia James announced the creation of the Reproductive Freedom and Equity Program, which will provide funding to abortion providers and nonprofit organizations, help patients pay for uncompensated abortions, and give grants to nonprofit organizations that facilitate patients’ travel to New York to receive abortions in the state.

The five-vote majority needed in the Supreme Court to overturn two key precedents on abortion rights remains on track following the leak of a draft majority opinion authored by Justice Samuel Alito. Justices who are expected to join Alito in overturning the 1973 case of Roe v. Wade and the 1992 case of Planned Parenthood v. Casey include Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett.

Hochul’s press office has not responded to the Washington Examiner’s request for comment.
