Ex-NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio planning congressional run for newly drawn district

Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio may be making a return to politics, this time for a run in a congressional district in the state.

The former mayor is eyeing a run for New York’s newly drawn 10th Congressional District, the seat vacated by Democratic Rep. Jerrold Nadler as he fights against his former longtime ally Rep. Carolyn Maloney in the 12th Congressional District. State Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein, a Democrat, was told by de Blasio that “he is committed to running in the race” and has already called donors to inform them of his intentions, Eichenstein told the New York Post.

“These neighborhoods are not foreign to him. He’s been representing some of these neighborhoods since 2001, and whether it’s been perfect or not at all times, these relationships are long-standing and run deep,” Eichenstein said.

De Blasio, who was succeeded by Eric Adams on Jan. 1, has already clarified in January that he does not intend to run for governor of New York this November. In October 2021, he had an approval rating of 25% for his performance as mayor, with 56% of New York voters viewing him unfavorably.

The former mayor also attempted to win the Democratic nomination for the 2020 presidential election but dropped out in September 2019.

The 12th District merges the Upper East Side and Upper West Side into a single district through a new congressional map proposed Monday. If enacted, Nadler and Maloney would be poised for a primary battle against one another.
