Have you ever looked back at your old photos and thought to yourself, “Why does everyone look so thin?”

If you look at any “crowd shot” from a few decades ago, everyone appears to be so much healthier looking than they are today.

Why is that?

Well, a Twitter user by the name of Brian Sanders believes he knows why, and it’s about a lot more than just “food.”

From Brian’s Twitter thread:

How were people effortlessly thin in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s?
– They didn’t do crazy diets
– They didn’t have calorie counting apps
– They didn’t have to fast
– They didn’t have gym memberships
… and they even ate dessert

It’s all about portion control.

– They ate food cooked from scratch
– They ate animal protein
– They ate full fat
– They ate out only as a treat
– They didn’t eat foods w/ long ingredient lists

… so they were properly satiated by their foods so they naturally ate the right amount long term

And then the 80s happened, and that’s when everything started to change.

What happened?

– The US dietary guidelines got introduced
– The food industry created a multitude of low-fat products
– Huge increase in seed oil, refined grains, added sugar displacing real foods
– Increase of additives & pesticides
– Societal norms changed to eating out

And this is when “emotional eating” became a thing.

People now eat for pleasure, because they’re sad, or from boredom

Because these foods are constantly marketed to them & are cheap & convenient

And they’re never full because the protein & nutrients have been removed from the food supply

There’s almost no choice but to overeat

Processed foods are packed with sugar, chemicals, unhealthy fats and fillers that many people crave and use as a “coping mechanism” for their issues.

Some would argue that these types of foods are addictive, and that every fast food joint, and unhealthy grocery store aisle are the “drug” dealers.
