Singer-songwriter legend David Crosby dead at 81…

David Crosby, the folk-rock singer-songwriter who channeled gifts for creativity and controversy into more than five decades on stage, has died at 81, according to people close to Mr. Crosby.

The people close to Mr. Crosby said they were informed Thursday of his death. One of those people said the news of Mr. Crosby’s death came from the musician’s wife’s sister. She couldn’t be reached for comment. Mr. Crosby’s wife and representatives also couldn’t be reached.

A two-time inductee to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Mr. Crosby was a founding member of the Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash. He primarily sang and played rhythm guitar, both in groups and as a solo performer. His singing and lyrics made him a figurehead of 1960s and ’70s counterculture, opposing the war in Vietnam and embracing progressive causes and psychedelic experimentation. His music reflected his love for jazz, guitars and alternate tunings, and groups he was a part of sold millions of albums. [Wall Street Journal]
