No country will ever survive when its own citizens hate it, which is why the left has spent decades teaching schoolchildren to do just that. President Trump on Thursday delivered a defiant speech against the far left cultural revolution trying to tear down America’s history, culture, and institutions.

The president’s speech was addressed to the White House Conference on American History, gathered at the National Archives Museum in Washington D.C.

The president repeatedly attacked the lie that the riots of the past summer were “peaceful protests” aimed solely at “police brutality.” The mobs that are ripping down statues of Junipero Serra, Francis Scott Key, and Thomas Jefferson are motivated by something far more sinister: A desire to burn all of American society to the ground, and found a completely new country ruled by themselves amid the ashes.

“Whether it is the mob on the street or the cancel culture in the board room, the goal is the same: To silence dissent, to scare you out of speaking the truth, and to bully Americans into abandoning their values, their heritage, and their very way of life,” the president said.

Importantly, rather than speaking in vague platitudes, the president specifically named the specific weapons the left is using to drive its classroom assault on America: Books by Howard Zinn, works channeling critical race theory, and The New York Times’s recent 1619 Project.

The president particularly singled out the Times’s heavily-criticized 1619 Project for being, from its very conception, motivated by a desire to delegitimize America’s entire history.

“This project rewrites American history to teach our children that we were founded on the principle of oppression, not freedom. Nothing could be further from the truth. America’s founding set in motion the unstoppable chain of events that abolished slavery, secured civil rights, defeated communism and fascism, and built the most fair, equal, and prosperous nation in human history.”

The president assailed the far-reaching fanaticism of the woke mobs by highlighting the story of American founder Caesar Rodney.

While suffering from cancer, Rodney rode 70 miles to Philadelphia to cast a tiebreaking vote for Delaware to join the other colonies in declaring independence from Britain. For almost a century, a statue of Rodney stood in Wilmington, Delaware, until June, when local Democratic politicians had it taken down to placate the mob.

To make up for Rodney’s dishonor in Delaware, Trump announced that a statue of Rodney would be added to the statuary garden of great Americans that Trump seeks to build in Washington, D.C.

The climax of the president’s speech was a promise to sign a new executive order creating a commission to promote America’s true values and history, fittingly named the “1776 Commission.”

The president’s speech is a badly needed one, taking the left’s attacks on American cultural identity seriously rather than simply dismissing them as irrelevant. The left has succeeded, over and over again, because they have injected their ideology into public institutions, and used taxpayer funds to propagate anti-American views. This cannot be stopped simply with bland defenses of “free speech.” America will only be protected when politicians are willing to be pro-America: In favor of America’s heroes, history, culture, and people, and its fundamentally positive impact on the world. Most Republicans have been too cowardly to do that, just as they have been too cowardly to protect citizens from mob terror. When Mitt Romney sees a mob marching against America, he decides its time to join the mob and start repeating its slogans. The right must follow Trump’s path, not Romney’s. If they don’t, they’ll keep losing, just like Romney did, and eventually they will lose their whole country.
