Peter Daszak has received another grant from the NIH…

…to study bat coronaviruses in the wild.

After everything the world has just been though.

After all the risky research that was supposed to protect us from a global pandemic failed to stop one.
You can see the grant for yourself right here: reporter.nih.gov/search/0jAp779…
“Specific Aim 1) community-based surveys and biological sampling of people frequently exposed to wildlife in Myanmar, Laos, and Vietnam, to find serological evidence of spillover”
“Specific Aim 2) sampling and PCR screening of bats and other wildlife at community surveillance sites”

PLEASE DON’T DO THIS
“full genome sequencing and cell entry assays to assess ability to infect human cells”

HUMAN CELL LINE INFECTIONS AAAAHHHHH
“They may also provide data on wildlife reservoirs and community spillover events of relevance to the origin of COVID-19.”

I was told by the scientists that the origin of COVID-19 was already settled 🧐
“Finally, we will rapidly supply viral sequences and isolates for use in vaccine and therapeutic development”

“Supplying viral isolates” means having live viral samples and shipping them around the world.
I’m honestly just speechless. If there were any Justice in the world there would at least be an extremely thorough investigation, and an immediate ban on collecting samples, running infectivity assays in human cells, and storing or transporting live viruses.
At the VERY LEAST we could put a stop to Daszak getting further funding for the exact thing we are rightly worried caused the pandemic. If there’s even *any shred of doubt* this caused millions of deaths worldwide, the work should be at least paused until further notice.
I must conclude that these organizations are both shameless, and completely irredeemable. There is a failure of leadership and common sense so profound we should shut down the NIH immediately and fire anyone involved, before starting with a clean slate. I see no other way.
And yet, nothing will be done. No one will stop these people. There should be only one platform for anyone running for office today: never let this happen again! But no. There is no sanity left in the system. I simply don’t know what to say anymore.

I’ve been enjoying @diviacaroline’s deeper dive on the orthogonality thesis recently, and wanted to try to lay out in my words a quick argument against strong orthogonality, feel free to comment or rebut etc
If we are talking about super intelligent AGI such that they’re deriving all the laws of physics from watching a video feed or whatever, it seems quite highly likely that they’ll independently derive game theory…
Once you have a notion of game theory, you’ve already developed the foundations for understanding cooperation, including some very complex forms of cooperation.

I figure it’s worth posting a summary thread about my current thoughts on COVID to refer back to:

Like many great blunders in history, we went into this without an exit plan.

The landscape has changed such that risk is now individual cost/benefit more than public health. 1/
I was fully on board with early COVID Zero attempts. Containing and eliminating this virus, like we did with SARS1, would have been an enormous boon to the world.

But the extremely anemic response in the entire world outside of Asia and Oceania guaranteed failure. 2/
The fallback plan was red/green zones with local containment, lots of quarantine when moving between them, contact tracing, etc. De facto we got a few jurisdictions with this system, but I hoped it could work in many more countries. But that ship has also sailed now. 3/

I can’t take it any longer. I’m starting a thread to record bad inflation takes. 😡

Alright, so is there really a puzzle with prison and homeless asymptomatic rates?

The picture doesn’t look quite that clear. A thread...
As of this article a week ago, Boston had a total of 426 positive cases in the homeless population.

But 97 of those homeless were already *in the hospital* for a whopping 23% hospitalization rate.

So the ones in the shelter were much less sick.

google.com/amp/s/www.bost…
The super high asymptomatic rate in Ohio was from the Marion Correctional Institute. But we can look across the whole Ohio prison system instead.

There are 3878 cases, and 19 deaths, for a CFR (and likely IFR) of 0.5% as of now. That seems normal.

Alright I’m going to take @vgr’s bait

1 like = 1 take on Trump 😬

The takes might be hot, the takes might be cold, but the takes will be correct.
@vgr 1) Trump represents more of a continuation of various trends than a clear, radical break from the past.
@vgr 2) Trump Derangement Syndrome is a real thing, but it's a subset of Generalized Political Derangement Syndrome, which affects both left and right to different degrees.

I have seen a lot of surprise/confusion as to why so many libertarians became reactionaries, but I think there is a consistent deep structure here 1/
The core value they hold is an *aversion to violence*, whether rooted in personal fear or the harms to society or whatever 2/
The libertarian solution is to have everyone voluntarily abstain from violence (the non-aggression principle). This does seem to work well among small, self-selected groups. I don’t know almost any libertarians who have gotten into fist fights 3/
