A Grammy Award winner was killed in an officer-involved shooting at a home in Hermitage Thursday, sources confirm.

MNPD reported a SWAT officer fired on an armed 54-year-old man who was wanted for domestic aggravated assault and aggravated kidnapping warrants. The four-time Grammy Award winner was then killed in the incident.

Mark Capps, reportedly woke up his wife and stepdaughter at 3 a.m. Thursday morning and took them into the family room where he held them at gunpoint. Police added that he threatened to kill them multiple times if they tried to call for help.

MNPD spokesperson Don Aaron said the incident was going on for awhile until Capps eventually fell asleep on a bed. At this time, his wife, 60, and stepdaughter, 23, escaped the home.

"As the SWAT members were on the front porch area of the home, he actually came to the door, opened the door with gun in hand," said Don Aaron. "At that point during that altercation with the SWAT members, he was fatally shot."

Don Aaron confirmed that SWAT officer Kendall Coon, a 14-year veteran with MNPD, fired at Capps. It is unknown at this time how many shots were fired.

MNPD adds that the wife and stepdaughter left the home Thursday morning and are now safe. They are currently at Family Safety Center where they were working to obtain an order of protection against Capps.

No officers were injured in the incident, Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) confirmed to FOX 17 News.

Don Aaron does not believe that Capps fired at the officers but because Capps had a gun in his hand he refused to drop, SWAT officers say he was an imminent threat to them.

Police and SWAT were alerted about the situation given the danger described by the family members and the access to firearms inside the home, Don Aaron reported.

Police have released a portion of body camera video from the shooting. Watch it below, or click here.

Metro Nashville Community Oversight (MNCO), an independent oversight body that addresses police accountability, and their investigators responded to the scene of the deadly shooting.

The oversight board confirmed that they reviewed the body worn camera footage at MNPD Headquarters, but that the team still has questions about how the incident ended with someone's life being taken.

Anytime there’s a loss of life of an individual during an encounter with MNPD it is a tragedy...We don’t know all the details from the hours leading up to this encounter but we will continue our investigation as we have in the past of any police officer involved shootings. We were not expecting to have a police shooting occur this soon in the New Year and we send our condolences to the family.

Don Aaron said the SWAT team was in typical police gear, and it should have been apparent to Capps that they were with the police.

MNPD said there is no public arrest history for Capps for Davidson County and no recent 911 calls to that address of interest.

Capps is a Grammy Award winning-engineer, a source who wishes to remain anonymous confirmed.

Metro Police report that warrants were issued for Capps around 2 p.m. on Thursday.

The shooting took place near Music City Star Hermitage Station on Summit Run Place.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is investigating the officer-involved shooting, MNPD confirms.

TBI said they are working to review the series of events that led to the death of Capps by collecting evidence and conducting interviews.

All findings by the TBI will be shared with the district attorney general for further review and consideration, TBI reports.

This is an ongoing investigation. FOX 17 News will continue to follow this breaking news.
