Short thread on enigmatic Slavic masks found in Opole, Poland.
In 1965 during archaeological excavations of an early medieval Slav settlement on the island of Ostrówek in the middle of Odra River two unique wooden masks were found by the archeologists. 1/
First one is made of pine wood. It is 34cm high and 5cm thick. Holes for the eyes were placed on the same level and beneath them there was an irregular hole for the mouth. The nose, seen in profile, is also schematically carved into the object. It dates back to 11th cenury. 2/
Second one is unfortunately incomplete and made of birch wood. It measures 23cm in height and is around 2cm thick. Eye holes are placed at the same level, below them there is an only partially preserved mouth hole. The mask dates back to 12th century. 3/
Skulls and bones. A lot of them. Estimated at around twenty four thousand in total. Buried and some of them displayed within a modest baroque St.Bartholomew Church in Poland. Known as the Skull Chapel it’s one of six of its kind to be found in Europe. Thread. 1/
Skull Chapel was built from 1776 by the local parish priest V.Tomasek. One day while inspecting church’s belfry Tomasek came across human remains sticking out of the ground. Shocked he started unearthing the nearby area with the help of his sacristan and a local grave digger. 2/
What they found were the remains of victims of Thirty Years War, three Silesian Wars, epidemics and famines in the area. Men, women and children of all walks of life. The skeletons were cleaned, whitened and stacked in the crypt under the chapel to find peace after death. 3/
