Todd Field Says it is “Highly Likely” That ‘Tár’ Was His Final Film

March 17, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

The enigma that is Todd Field continues.

In an interview with the great film magazine Cinema Scope, Field claims that TÁR is "highly likely" to be his last film:

Before this past year’s “TAR,” Field hadn’t made a film since “Little Children” (2006) and, before that, his incendiary debut “In the Bedroom” (2001).

Whatever happened to him since 2006 was a mystery to us all. Both films garnered eight Oscar nominations in total, the former actor was heralded as a major new voice and then, poof, he was gone.

That is until last year when he started production on “Tár,” his first film in over 16 years. Cate Blanchett delivered an incredible performance and Field’s direction reached near-operatic levels of artistry.

In the interview, Field gave no reason as to why he’s quitting directing. Maybe he’s sick of the direction the industry is going. I can imagine that after having had so many potential projects fall by the wayside these last few decades, he really doesn’t want to go through that whole ordeal again.

If “TÁR” is indeed his final film then he’s going out on the highest of notes.
