Part of the reason we have an increasingly politicized legal system is that the lawyers and judges are getting dumber. It’s not only that they’re political and acting politically - it’s that the notion of objective justice is something they don’t even understand.
To think of law objectively requires an ability to step outside yourself, your circumstances - treat justice/fairness abstractly. Requires some philosophical capacity. This is not a universal trait. We're not even trying to select judges for this capacity now...
...and we have so many of them - and so many lawyers and law students - that it wouldn't be possible to limit the profession to such people anyway. Someone like Bragg is inevitable in an environment like this.
