‘Mission: Impossible 8’ Halted Due to Writers Strike, Only 40% of the Film Was Shot

June 13, 2023 Jordan Ruimy

Tom Cruise cannot be happy about this news.

Movies have had a rough go in the pandemic era, with the constant stop-start filming and all of the delayed releases. Now the Writers strike is upon us and productions are being delayed left and right, again.

Tom Cruise has been shooting “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part Two” in South Africa and Australia, but production was recently halted due to the WGA writer’s strike.

In the latest issue of Empire, director Christopher McQuarrie addressed what he called the “unrelenting” string of delays that have hit the production of the franchise closer.

McQuarrie confirmed that only 40% of ‘Part Two’ has been shot. With the film having a release date set for summer 2024, this one could be delayed. There’s no current set date to restart production.

‘Part Two’ began production on March 24, 2022. It’s been 15 months, and they’ve only shot 40% of it?! That’s insane.

The first chapter, being released this summer, ends on a cliff-hanger. The plan is to have both films serve as a sendoff for Cruise’s Ethan Hunt character. This is an ambitious undertaking and I really hope it was worth all this effort.
