Is Fox News Becoming Controlled Opposition?

For years, Fox News has repeatedly disappointed the right with its handling of certain major stories. Nevertheless, its dominance as the supreme media entity on the right has never been seriously challenged. That could all be changing right now.

A source inside Fox News told Revolver that “millions” of viewers have stopped watching the network. The source said that outwardly, senior executives attribute the dip to a normal decline in interest with the end of the 2020 election. But internally, these executives are deeply disturbed and surprised by the drop in viewership, and a corresponding surge in anti-Fox animus on the right.

If Fox execs are surprised, they shouldn’t be. Fox’s handling of the 2020 election could be a Rubicon moment, where the channel decisively shifts from being a dissident media operation to a form of controlled opposition. The shift is driven by individual personalities at Fox, mostly those in the company’s news division (as opposed to its primetime opinion programming). These personalities are not only blatant in their dislike of Donald Trump, but are also progressively more obvious in showing their disdain for his voters.

The shift started on Election Night, when Fox raced far ahead of other news outlets in projecting Joe Biden as the winner in Arizona based solely on his lead from mail-in ballots.

This wasn’t the act of a neutral news organization simply reporting the facts. In fact, it was a gross failure of election reporting. In the end, Biden won Arizona by just 0.3%, barely ten thousand votes.

But Fox never wavered in its wholly unjustified call. Instead, the network brought out the man responsible, Democratic donor Arnon Mishkin, to smugly declare that the network had special knowledge that simpletons could not grasp.

Fox had many other failures that Tuesday night besides the Arizona call. The network also aggressively predicted that Democrats would add five or more seats to their House Majority:

In fact, Democrats lost seats and will only preserve their majority by the slimmest of margins. Just like with Arizona, Fox refused to retract its forecast, with Bret Baier only admitting the flub 8 days later.

At another point during the broadcast, anchor Bret Baier mentioned to Washington correspondent Chris Stirewalt that polls of the election appeared to be way off. Ludicrously, Stirewalt disputed the point, insisting that pre-election polls were “good.” Of course, the polls were not good and it was obvious from the earliest moments of Election Night. Polling averages showed Trump down slightly in Florida, but he romped to an easy 3-point win. Small polling leads in Iowa, Ohio, and Texas all turned into big Trump wins. And of course, in the Midwest states of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, absurd polls showing Trump down 10+ points were exposed as shams as Trump built huge election-night leads in all three states. But at Fox News, Stirewalt was lecturing viewers that they were too stupid to understand the metrics.

That was the tone throughout the night. Even as results indicated Trump was massively outperforming polls and threatening to win, Chris Wallace dragged out those same polls to downplay any possibility of a Trump win. While Fox raced to call Arizona for Biden, it showed no similar urgency to call Florida for Trump. Instead, Wallace explained that the state didn’t matter, and then pivoted to reading off discredited polling data to explain why Trump was going to lose.

In the days after the election, Fox only further alienated its viewers. That Saturday, as media outlets began calling the presidential race for Joe Biden, Chris Wallace delivered a minute-long extemporaneous sermon explaining that the race was over because the media had anointed Biden the winner, and thus “momentum” made legal challenges over fraud irrelevant.

On Sunday, as White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany described the administration’s plans to continue challenging alleged voter fraud, Neil Cavuto imitated MSNBC and CNN by cutting away from the press conference, explaining that he couldn’t “in good countenance (sic) continue showing” viewers the claims their president was making.

Then, on Monday, America’s Newsroom anchor Sandra Smith was caught on a hot mic ridiculing a guest who suggested Biden might have benefited from voter fraud.

This is far more than Fox merely taking a skeptical attitude toward Donald Trump’s post-election efforts. This is a network whose personnel are reveling in their contempt for the network’s own viewers.

What is happening?

Fox’s news team doesn’t seem to understand the role it fills in the media ecosystem. Fox should, of course, try to be an objective news outlet. It should report truthfully and not traffic in propaganda. But it is not, and should not try to be, a neutral news outlet, in the sense of trying to appeal equally to all segments of America. Fox is a channel whose target audience is the American right, tens of millions of people whose values, interests, and perspectives are ignored and denigrated by virtually every other major media entity in the country. Fox isn’t “Fair and Balanced” because it is the only neutral media outlet. It is “Fair and Balanced” because it offers a conservative outlook to contrast with the liberal domination everywhere else.

Fox is flailing right now. And everybody can see it.

Fox has irritated conservatives many times in the past, but there is a real possibility that this backlash could be more sustained and far-reaching than those before it. Ratings for Fox competitors Newsmax and OANN have surged, thanks in part to direct promotion by the President:

If President Trump leaves office in January, his anti-Fox efforts could grow well beyond tweets. Recent reporting by The Wall Street Journal confirms that the President is open to creating his own conservative media empire. This could be done by buying Newsmax or OANN, or simply by launching a new service from scratch. Even if this new venture didn’t surpass Fox, it could be devastating to the network’s bottom line:

A serious rival to Fox News would be a threat to Fox Corp. If a competing network were to take 20% of Fox News’s audience by 2024, it could sap about $200 million in annual profit from the company, according to a report from media analyst Michael Nathanson. [WSJ]

As Revolver pointed out in a much discussed piece, the dirty little secret about major media conglomerates like Fox is that they are not really about being profitable in the normal business sense. Rather, their function is to maintain influence over the population.

For a media empire operating at the highest levels, the influence it wields on the public’s mind is far more valuable to the ruling power structure than any self-contained profit that could be generated by optimizing their news product to suit the taste of the audience.

This does not mean that profit is irrelevant to a media company. In Tucker’s case, his stratospheric ratings are a great tool of leverage, and without profit, a company must continually court new investors. But the point remains that for a serious media enterprise, profit is always secondary to influence.

Just as a social media company’s true product is its user data, the true product of a major media company is the flow of narratives that shape the perception of reality. Wielding influence over the public mind will always be more valuable than any profit that could be generated by optimizing the news to suit public tastes.

READ THE REST HERE…

The most important control the oligarchs have over the American people is their control over the flow of information and their ruthless protection of oligarch-aligned narratives on all issues — from immigration, to Covid, to foreign policy, and now, to what transpired in the dead of night in voting centers in the most corrupt and dysfunctional cities in America.

The unified messaging against Trump and the American patriots who support him reminds us of the stakes involved in this fight. It is imperative for patriots to both establish and support our own media institutions to preserve a pipeline and conduit for delivering the truth directly to the American people.

This is a daunting challenge that requires the best minds, significant capital, and an iron will. We must draw our confidence and resolve in the justice of our mission and the inevitability of our victory. Control of the major media organs gives the corrupt American regime and ruling class a hold on power for the moment. But the fact that they find it necessary to control all media reveals a decisive and fatal weakness — the truth is not on their side, and the American people are not on their side. The second a megaphone appears that blasts a truthful narrative to the American people is the second the corrupt ruling class loses their power. President Trump has given us a glimpse of this, and there will be more to come. The fight for our nation’s future has just begun. Game on.

That fact that Fox News hired a PR firm to fix this problem suggests to me that they are clueless. Smart leadership would resolve this issue themselves.

Tucker publicly doubles down. This is the correct crisis management public position for his employer and for him. Nevertheless, it won’t work and privately Tucker knows it. He is under contract and has little flexibility to get out until Fox falls lower. Fox will indeed fall lower. Tucker is biding his time.

DeFox yourself. Watch Tucker in re-posts only.

Agree. This is the motivation to cut the cable. I don’t want a cent of my cable provider bill to go to Murdoch, et al. Or to overhyped athletes that could be doing good on their dime, not their employers’. Plenty of news and entertainment alternatives out there. When RT is more conservative, fair and balanced than Fox and the other MSM, we gots problems, America.

When Disney (ABC..etc) bought them out, it ruined Fox. I cancelled Disney+ too.

Pablo

Disney doesn’t own FNC, it bought 21st Century Fox. They bought the broadcast network and FX among others, but FNC and Fox Biz were spun off into the Fox Corporation which owns them now. This is Lachlan Murdoch, not Disney.

Reply to  Pablo

The merger between Disney and 21st century Fox for 70+ billion was in 2019. Fox broadcasting remained “independent” from the deal because Disney already owns ABC Broadcasting and can’t not own multiple companies.

Influence can spill between corporate records. Disney isn’t run by Walt anymore. Not sure he would have supported Disney China (re china’s human rights violations..does seem to mesh with walt’s vision) as Iger is very left. https://thewaltdisneycompany.com/leaders/robert-a-iger/

https://www.vox.com/culture/2019/3/20/18273477/disney-fox-merger-deal-details-marvel-x-men

Btw Murdoch Family Trust became a major Disney shareholder in the merger. Again influence does not stay in corporate minute books.

Comcast/NBC/MSNBC/CBS seem to walk the same fine line with the clear and obvious influence/spillage into each network.

Our media needs a revamping as the control of information (print, digital and cable) is in only a few hands. Not really balanced whatsoever.

None of this matters. If this illegitimate election is allowed to stand, there will never be another one. Not in 2024 or anytime in the future. Elections are now irrelevant and unless that is corrected, now, there is no longer any reason to vote.

More importantly, a political solution is no longer valid for millions of Americans. Millions of armed to the teeth Americans I might add. When you remove the last vestige of hope for justice, there is but one solution left to prevent being enslaved and there are enough people that care left in this country to initiate that solution.

In addition to that, future elections would be off the table anyway and the last thing on anyone’s mind. The globalist elite within this gov is not limited to democrats, they infest the republican party and every institution within government. They are not going to take the chance of waiting for another populist to rise (or rise again) and ready or not, they intend to enact their Great Reset and take the world… Right now.

Without the full cooperation of America, their plan can not succeed. We own the worlds monetary system and we are self sufficient. It is that simple. As soon as they have the reins of power on January 21st, the final takeover will be put into motion and within a year, America will be a shell of what it was and world government will be in place. Covid will be the vehicle.

That is not set in stone but that is their agenda. The wildcard they are underestimating is the millions of armed Americans willing to fight and die for their country. That includes the vast majority of our active duty forces and fourteen million retired veterans.

Best case scenario is we ultimately win this through force but a hundred million or more Americans are going to die in the process. Most of those deaths will be on the largely unarmed left side as they live in densely packed cities which will necessarily be primary targets but a lot of good Americans will die as well. The only thing for certain is that America will be forever changed and the lifestyle that all of us have enjoyed will never again be seen during our lifetimes. It will be decades before any type of normalcy returns to this country. Few news media companies will survive and their people are also primary targets. All of them.

Good luck to you and yours. A storm is coming either way.

If the left gets away with the steal then it’s over for the USA.
Biden/Harris will happily help to implement the great reset/world government.
They will attempt total control over our lives. They already censor our speech.
They will surely try to take our guns. They will remove cash from the system
so we will be dependent on a digital currency that they control. The vaccine will be another method of control…..if you refuse to take it they will target your bank accounts, work, and travel. The covid hoax is a means to wreck the economy and harm Trump. The lockdowns are destroying small businesses, ruining people’s lives…..causing chaos and depression and misery.
Schumer says he will add two states (and Dem Senators) pack the SC, end the filibuster, and open the borders.
This is a communist takeover and it is pure evil.
White people in America will be like the whites in South Africa.

Have you noticed that some of the Big Tech companies have been experimenting with satellites and creepy looking robots for quite some time? I agree that the American Bolsheviks wouldn’t hesitate to suppress and persecute, but those on the right need to be prepared with more than just firearms if the left initiates widespread violence. Skillful scientists, engineers, computer experts and communications specialists are needed.

Rick, I support what you wrote. When my country called in 1960, I, with many others, pledged to stand against all enemies, foreign and domestic. That oath will always stand. Sounds like you took the same oath. I’m watching for some type of command structure to rise up that will call us vets to duty; the enemy now is domestic. But it is a familiar enemy; in North Indochina, the enemy was Communism. In certain American states today, it’s the same damnable enemy: Communism. If our political leaders cannot, or will not, stand up against the Marxist insurrection in America, then we must.

I’m still watching Fox big three at night. It would be stupid to cut myself off from the three most reliably conservative hosts on TV. On the other hand, I’ve abandoned them for everything else. There is no point in having to decipher every word, wondering how true it is. Fox cast aside its loyal base to quit getting hammered by the other media. Now they are going to take it in the shorts. Can’t believe this is happening, it is as if Rush turned liberal.

Never before has a party that failed to win a single competitive house seat manage to win the presidency in the same election. In the states in question we witnessed a dramatic deviation from the pre-observed ratio of mail-in votes between the candidates in the middle of the night vs. everywhere else. We also witnessed turnout numbers from these same precincts far in excess of everywhere else including places with nearly identical demographics. You don’t need to examine a single vote or envelope to know that the statistical analysis says no way. That these supposed journalists hear this and look at anyone saying like this like they have two heads. My only question is are they so ideological boxed in that they can’t even imagine that an election with security holes a mile wide would have massive cheating or do they, like many of us, know exactly what happened but just prefer the outcome regardless how it was arrived at?

Fox News has been controlled opposition since it was founded. Just like the Republican party has been controlled opposition for the entirely of our lives. Boomers that are surprised by this don’t understand that they have been victims of social engineering their entire lives.

America has been this corrupt for over a hundred years. The only thing that’s changed is that it’s become more obvious to the average Joe.

I agree. I had a Boomer say to me the other day that it’s hard for them because they don’t know what to trust anymore, in regards to news. I suggested that they do their own research. They didn’t even know what that meant. I walked them through finding first-hand sources like scientific research and undercover video from whistle-blowers and independent journalists at the scenes of events. They didn’t trust the first-hand sources! It was bewildering. They tried to find some site online to validate the first-hand sources (the only sites they found were Leftist and biased). I told them that it doesn’t work like that. The whole point of first-hand sources is that they speak for themselves, you have to use them to reach your own conclusions by thinking, using that evidence. They had no clue what to do. Just the act of taking evidence and thinking through to a conclusion was beyond their capacity. For the record, this person has several college degrees. They don’t have dementia. This is just how badly they’ve hobbled these people.

The terrifying thing is, I see the same trend with Millennials. They can’t finish a thought on their own. People complain that the world is in such bad shape. I think it’s a miracle that it isn’t worse.

I so appreciate your comment and can add to it. I was covering the war in Serbia for a msm outlet. We had a major skirmish happening before our eyes but my bosses in NY told me to do a video version of a story they had seen in that day’s NYT.
It took me a disconcerting amount of time to get them to understand they wanted me to report on yesterday’s news (just because the Times had found something newsworthy) when ‘tomorrow’s news’ was happening before our eyes.
I won that little battle ….but sadly came to understand much later the entire ‘war’ was a UN CIA MI6 creation.

What Fox missed, is that Fox viewers, most traditional and older Americans, are acute in knowing the details of events. They pay attention and have for years. When Fox on-air people leave out important facts, when they spin and manipulate, when they appear to be “CNN Light” the long-term Fox News viewers know in an instant. No more. How can viewers trust the integrity of a media empire which hires a Democrat spokes person who cheated for Hillary Clinton to help her win a debate? (She didn’t.) Go find a liar and make that person a news analyst? Put out front a man with a shrill voice and an arrogant attitude who makes a debunked story proven with video of our president condemning white nationalists, and make only part of that story front-and=center during a debate? Deceitfully make our president look racist when he is not? We noticed. We sure did. What is fair and balanced about Mike Wallace?

Kelly, Stenchfield, War Room Pandemic with Steve Bannon are a breath of fresh air, there is an honesty that screams into the living room now, none of the old tired talking heads rehashing nothing new, Congress members saying the same things they have griped about for years, while never taking action. Fox News is tiresome. NewsMax gives hope that we actually have some people brave enough to tell the truth. No, I am finished tuning into Hannity and Tucker Carlson unless they move to NewsMax or a new Trump network. I just cannot reward Fox with even an “itty-bitty” boost to their ratings or credibility. We do not reward dishonesty.

The ascendancy of Chris “What’s wrong with a little diversity training” Wallace and Paul “Risk Pools” Ryan was basically the end for Fox News. They want to be center-right but they don’t seem to realize that the communists who have taken over every institution in American life have no use for them except maybe to spout pro-Israel propaganda and to have them give a right-wing justification for shipping every manufacturing job overseas leaving us destitute. We needed people who were up for the fight ahead of us. They surrendered before the war even started. There is truly no reason to watch Fox News unless you are interested in voting for Mitt “Magic Underwear” Romney sometime in the future. They absolutely sold us out in every imaginable way. I don’t even watch Tucker anymore. And I used to love me some Tucker. I wouldn’t watch a fox news show if they literally sent me free MyPillows for life now. They are backstabbing, globalist scum who will completely undermine Americans to save face with their international friends. Our Republic was snuffed out by traitors. We were made into unwelcome guests in our own country for the sake of who and what exactly?

Do you Boomers really think that Fox News was ever on your side or even believed in your values? They’re a globalist megacorporation that cheer led the Iraq war and was anti-trump back in the 2016 primaries. Murdoch is a globalist that would sooner dine with Soros than ever so much as shake your plebeian hand.

It’s amazing how utterly naive and indoctrinated Boomers are. Then again they did grow up with only 3 channels and no alternative sources of information so I guess it’s expected.

I grew up with only two or three channels that came in clear, but I was never brainwashed. Both the Boomers and the Millennials tend to cluster in groups, lots of group-based identity, and the crowd-sourcing of thoughts/opinions. My generation never did that and we had a lot more independent thinking. I think that tendency for individualism rather than collectivism was what made the difference for me (and my generation), as opposed to the number of channels I had growing up.

The shift didn’t start on Election night; it was essentially completed on Election night.

More accurately it began (or rather, gained steam) when the news division consistently treated the Democrat Russia narrative (and later the Ukraine narrative) as credible, yet largely dismissed the notion it was not only lacking in fact and plausibility, but most importantly lacked any substantive narrative. The shift in the adjectives and language it used to describe news shifted over time to more closely mirror the strongly left-leaning advocacy. It continually and uncritically treated it’s own (and other) polling – which clearly defied logic – as “news”, reporting, and fact.

It jumped on the “coronavirus cases” bandwagon while virtually never acknowledging the assorted denominators which provide necessary context. Was this because they were simply lazy or because it was part of new agenda. If the news division is filling 16 hours of content each day, I’d argue it was the much more the latter than the former.

The list of shifts by the Fox News division over the last 4 years is almost endless. The shift was mostly completed on election night – with the mission finalized on the Saturday declaration of Biden victory.

Do not weaken and return to Fox or any other entity who has shown a proclivity to participate in the very real, sophisticated, and concerted effort to undermine our constitutional republic. When FNC’s HQ is literally 2 blocks away from NBC, all of the self important talking heads from each are going to run into each other every morning at Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, etc… and then hang out together at few open high end food places left in MidTown. Just look at the cross-pollenating of each others networks (and others) in the past 2 years, and all these people with such egos, they want nothing to do with the common people any more. And as to the future of the real remaining talent (like Hannity, Levin, Laura, and Tucker), Tucker all but confirmed their departures the other night when he said he was staying and that FNC was expanding his activities…Yeah Right… I am sure Tom Brady said the same thing to the New England Patriots fans last year…It is a classic sign of panic at FNC and that Tucker (et al) has already been approached by other entities – the clock is already ticking for Tucker’s departure.

Former FOX devote here. I would have in in the background most of the day at the office. Now I only watch Tucker, Greg and Jessie on Saturday night and Maria on Sunday mornings. I have HATED Sean Hannity for years, he says the same crap over and over and over and has a huge over inflated ego and doesn’t let guests (who are much smarter than he) talk. Laura has an ego only second to Hannity, so I no longer watch her either.

Fox has forgotten who made them number one. They stepped on their own toes this time. Its been easy to see them moving to the left to increase viewership and bring their base along for the ride. However, Their base is getting wise and will look for greener news pastures. There is no coming back from this with their base alienated by Foxnews itself.

FOX controlled opposition? Has been for quite a while. Done with the bastards.

After reading this article I went over there just for about ten seconds. There was Juan saying “President Elect Joe Biden” and I IMMEDIATELY clicked out. When you stab your loyal audience in the back don’t be surprised when they go elsewhere en masse. Even the annoying Pillow Guy will go elsewhere to advertise. LOL

They have mainly been controlled opposition for a long time, one that targets conservative viewers. Tucker is becoming a one-off perhaps, but luminaries like Sean H and Laura I, though outspoken about various domestic political issues dear to their conservative base, will never do anything which substantively challenges the military-industrial-financial complex for example, or anything truly radical. The most they do is spread the misleading impression (which is controlled oppo tactic) that the system is fine, there are just a few rotten apples in the barrel which have to be rooted out.

We have been Fox News watchers since it’s inception. We will never, never, never forget their biased coverage the night of the General election; will never watch Fox News again no matter what changes they make. Disgusting!!!
Regardless, we now have Newsmax, Real Americas Voice, and OANN; they are superfluous!

I hear ya, Richard. That night I went to bed around 11pm almost in tears. Their coverage was totally despicable and unfair. Calling Arizona for Biden so early when hardly any votes were in almost made me throw up!

I was more in awe, personally. I just kept looking at the results on different sites (including Fox), baffled at how they refused to call states like Florida and Texas for Trump, while calling other states for Biden where he had a slimmer lead. They were all being so brazen about it. At a certain point, it seemed like the actual votes really didn’t matter (this was before any news of fraud came out). It was like watching a really contrived theater performance. I found it surreal and disturbing.

As a Canadian, i am a trump supporter and have looked to Fox for Conservative points of view. At this point I will not cancel my cable channel, but I will not watch the news side of the program.

It seems that nearly the entire Media complex, along with Silicon Valley oligarchs, along with millions of Communist Orcs….are arrayed against the America I remember and was born in…. and….
78 million Americans.

Once the Left manages to steal the Georgia senate runoff in January, it will be the entire
Federal Government, along with the above, is arrayed against us.

No disrespect to Tucker whom I love to watch but I am trying my darndest to boycott Fox. I try to watch previous airings or highlights on other outlets rather add me as a single viewer to their ratings. OANN & Newsmax are much better!

You do not need Tucker, Ingraham, Hannity to get the news. The tick tocks, the publicly displaying the fake polls in the lead up of the election. Ingraham went as far to say Joe ‘conned’ PA. How erroneous! Joe stole! Joe isnt calling for an audit No one in the uniparty is calling for it. Gee I wonder why. Yet they continue to talk like Joe won. They say, “Look how disasterous this will be with Joe Biden.” Meanwhile the Murdochs are laughing their buts off at their spineless hosts. They could be doing more but they cant, and therefore, they wont. A simple declaration saying, “We refuse to SPECULATE on a Biden administration because he hasnt won,”would work wonders. But they will never do that. So why waste an hour getting mad and laughing at their hysteria of a Biden presidency when it wont happen? I hope the numbers stay down. When President Trump wins remember what faux news is and make them go broke!
