If you ask anybody to list the most beautiful Hollywood icons of all time, one woman would be at the top of everyone’s list: American actress Raquel Welch. She was born was born as “Jo Raquel Tejada” on September 5, 1940 in Chicago, Illinois, and movies would never be the same.

Sadly, Ms. Welch passed away today, February 15, 2023 at 82 years old after a brief battle with an illness, according to family members.

While she was alive, Raquel was a powerful force, redefining what it was to be a Hollywood starlet and sex symbol. Raquel, whose father was Bolivian, had an exotic and alluring look. She wasn’t dainty and fragile, she was voluptuous — in all the right places — and had some muscle on her frame.

She was nothing like the typical “ditzy blonde” Hollywood bombshell.

And as a result, Raquel paved the way as both an accomplished actress and an international sex symbol.

Wikipedia:

[Welch] won a Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture Actress in a Musical or Comedy in 1974 for her performance in The Three Musketeers. She was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in Television Film for her performance in the film Right to Die (1987). In 1995, Welch was chosen by Empire magazine as one of the “100 Sexiest Stars in Film History”. Playboy ranked Welch No. 3 on their “100 Sexiest Stars of the Twentieth Century” list.

The “One Million Years B.C.” studio promo of Welch in her famous deerskin bikini became a best-selling poster and turned her into an instant pinup girl. The movie put Raquel Welch on the map and she quickly became one of the most sought-after female stars, and she absolutely dominated the 60s and 70s.

Fun fact about that movie, the famous “fury” bikini was her only outfit for the entire film. Go figure, right?

And speaking of fun facts, you probably didn’t know that Raquel Welch made a “guest appearance” in the the Oscar-winning movie “Shawshank Redemption.” It’s true, and even though she didn’t have any lines, Raquel still made an impression.

Eagle-eye movie watchers will recall that she was on the poster that Andy Dufresne had on his prison cell wall at the time of his escape. It was that famous “deerskin bikini” pinup image of Welch in “One Million Years B.C.” And prior to Dufresne’s escape, the prison warden referred to Welch as “Miss Fuzzy Britches.”

Here’s just a small sample of the movies that Raquel Welch starred and appeared in throughout her lifetime:

As sultry as Raquel was, one thing she wasn’t comfortable with was on-camera nudity. As a matter of fact, she flat out refused to participate in any nude scenes at all. She really was a tried and true “sex symbol” on her own terms.

Raquel was an icon who stood the test of time. Another thing that made her so unique was how gracefully she glided through time. She was beautiful when she was young, and she aged like a fine wine. Raquel was a rare Hollywood lady who aged gracefully, and looked gorgeous even as she got older.

Raquel was married 4 times and had two children. She will be greatly missed.

Rest in peace, Ms. Welch.
