UPDATE: 36 are dead and at least 50 were rescued by the Coast Guard out of the waters.

Yahoo News:

At least 36 people have been confirmed dead on the island of Maui after ferocious winds caused by Hurricane Dora in part fueled devastating wildfires across Hawaii, forcing thousands of people to evacuate.

It’s the deadliest wildfire the United States has seen in five years, following 2018’s Camp Fire that killed at least 85 people in California.

President Biden on Thursday approved a “major disaster” declaration for the state. “Anyone who’s lost a loved one, whose home has been damaged and destroyed is going to get help immediately,” he said.

Original story:

Flames from a wildfire that has gone rogue are currently engulfing the entire island of Maui. The situation has escalated to such an extent that people are resorting to jumping into the ocean to escape the scorching heat of the flames.

CBS News:

People on the Hawaiian island of Maui had to jump into the ocean Tuesday to escape flames and smoke from a wind-fueled wildfire, authorities said. The Coast Guard told CBS News it had rescued a dozen people in the town of Lahaina who turned to the water as refuge.

Coast Guard Lt. Elaine Simon told CBS News the wind was blowing thick black smoke toward the water.

The wildfire was widespread in Lahaina, including Front Street, an area of the historic town popular with tourists, County of Maui spokesperson Mahina Martin said in a phone interview with the Associated Press early Wednesday.

CBS Honolulu affiliate KGMB-TV said “videos on social media showed a wall of flames descending on Front Street in Lahaina and destroying a number of businesses.”

Front Street business owner Alan Dickar told the station, “Buildings on both sides were engulfed. There were no fire trucks at that point; I think the fire department was overwhelmed.”

He told CBS News’ Patrick Torphy, “Maui can’t handle this. … A lot of people just lost their jobs because a lot of businesses burned. A lot of people lost their homes. … This is going to be devastating for Maui.”

Why is this happening, and how did it get so out of control? The CBS piece continues:

The wildfire in Lahaina was one of many in Hawaii fanned by strong winds that burned multiple structures, forced evacuations and caused power outages in several communities as firefighters struggled to reach some areas that were cut off by downed trees and power lines. Some people reported having trouble evacuating due to gridlock, smoke and encroaching flames.

The National Weather Service said Hurricane Dora, which was passing to the south of the island chain at a safe distance of hundreds of miles, was partly to blame for gusts up to 80 mph that knocked out power as night fell, rattled homes and grounded firefighting helicopters.

The viral videos online are shocking. This is Lahaina on the island of Maui. Sadly, many fear this town is now gone, turned to ash.

Lahaina was once a very popular tourist destination, now, it’s in flames.

Many locals were forced to run into the ocean to escape the flames.

So incredibly eerie looking at those beautiful swaying palm trees, as the fiery blaze draws closer.

The high winds aren’t helping matters.

Maui looks like an apocalyptic hellscape.

Please take a moment to offer your thoughts and prayers for the people of Maui, Hawaii, and all the locals and first responders on the ground. They need all the love and support we can muster to come together and rebuild when the time is right.
