Gregg Popovich’s coaching career is a bit of a mystery right now. It could be coming to an end this summer or, maybe not. It’s hard to tell, because instead of talking about his career, team, or basketball in general, the disgraced coach of the San Antonio Spurs went on a loony politcal tirade Sunday night in Dallas at the final game of the season.

Of course, Popovich would probably like to forget this entire embarrassing season; as his team was one of the worst in the league. But that’s what you get when your coach is more focused on politics than basketball.

ESPN:

San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich’s pregame media availability Sunday opened with the NBA’s all-time wins leader declining to discuss whether he would consider retirement this offseason and ended with an unprompted, passionate speech lobbying for gun control legislation in America and criticizing “cowardly legislators who are selfish.”

Popovich, 74, has expressed strong opinions on gun control and other political issues frequently in recent years. He made a point to bring up the subject as his media session before the 138-117 win over the Dallas Mavericks seemed to be wrapping up, asking whether anyone in the room was carrying a firearm.

“I just wondered because we have a governor and lieutenant governor and an attorney general that made it easier to have more guns,” Popovich said, referring to Texas politicians. “That was a response to our kids getting murdered. I just thought that was a little bit strange decision. It’s just me, though.”

Popovich’s political ramblings were merciless and dragged on for over nine painfully dumb minutes.

During a speech that lasted more than nine minutes, Popovich criticized several Republican legislators, particularly in Texas and Tennessee. He expressed outrage about the expulsion of Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson from the Tennessee House of Representative after the pair of Black Democrats led gun control demonstrations on the chamber floor last week in the wake of a school shooting in Nashville.

“Well, since you asked, what would it take to budge those people? What would it take?” Popovich said. “I mean, we’ve got two young Black guys in Tennessee who just got railroaded by a bunch of people that I would bet down deep in their soul want to go back to Jim Crow. And what they just did is a good start. It’s beyond comprehension. And what were they guilty of? They actually protested?

At this point, it’s difficult to tell if Popovich is a basketball coach or an elderly version of attention whore David Hogg.

What a shame to watch this once highly-respected, talented coach hobble off on such a divisive and bitter note. Popovich was broken by Trump, and as a result he let down players and fans by behaving like a half-baked political kook instead of a highly-skilled basketball coach, and everyone deserved better.

Listen to Pop’s pathetic answer when asked about what he was most excited about going into this final game.

This man used to win championships with Tim Duncan, but Gregg Popovich’s Spurs were the second-worst in the league last season with 22 wins, as the legendary basketball coach is reduced to sputtering out liberal AOC-style talking points instead of focusing on actually winning basketball games.

Is coach Popovich senile? Or just mailing it in and cashing a few final paychecks?
