There is a fascinating 6-part series on TikTok that puts you in the mind of a North Korea citizen who’s trying to escape the brutal Communist regime.
And you find out very quickly that leaving is not as cut and dry as you may have thought.
Contrary to all the propaganda Kim Jong-un spews out about his little utopia, the truth is there’s not a darker place to live on earth than North Korea. Tyrant-wise, NK is on a totally different and much crazier level than any other country in the world.
So you can understand why people would risk everything, even their lives to escape. But it’s not easy to get out – for a number of reasons.
Most people would say, “Just run for the South Korea border…” Well, if it was that simple, everyone would be leaving. Getting to South Korea by the shortest and most “direct” path is one of the hardest and most dangerous ways to try and escape NK.
As it stands now, experts say North Korea is the hardest country to escape in the 21st century.
Part 1 and 2 examine what might happen if you decided to make that quick beeline run for the southern border.

So, if running across the border is too risky, what about swimming over?
If swimming over to South Korea is too dangerous, what about traveling to another nearby country and seeking shelter?
Clearly, China and Russia are no help, but is there a way to blend into the Chinese culture and get smuggled to South Korea by humanitarian groups?
Becoming a secret refugee in China might work, but wouldn’t it be easier to just make the trek to Mongolia and get automatically deported to South Korea?
Maybe, if it wasn’t for the treacherous Gobi Desert…

Sadly, that’s the abrupt end of the series – there is no “part 7.” However, after watching these 6 videos, it appears the safest and most reasonable route of escape from North Korea would probably be Thailand.
Sure, Mongolia is closer, but crossing the Gobi Desert would be a death sentence for most.
What do you think? If you were an NK citizen how would you plot your escape ?
